What Ignition Coils do
Your ignition coil takes the low voltage from your car's battery and
steps it up into the high voltage needed to fire the spark plug.
Every combustion cycle in your engine depends on a clean, strong spark
at exactly the right moment. A weak or failing coil doesn't always
cause an obvious breakdown — more often it shows up as misfires,
rough idling, hesitation under acceleration, poor fuel economy,
or a check engine light that keeps coming back.
